Safety programme for fireworks supervisors in Sivakasi

As the next step towards ensuring safety in fireworks units in Sivakasi, an exclusive course for supervisors would be launched from December 2. The four-day course was the outcome of the meeting held in Madurai on October 18 where Union minister of state for commerce and industries proposed such joint venture among the petroleum and explosives safety organisation (PESO) officials, engineering college principals in Virudhunagar district and Associations of Fireworks Manufacturers.

As decided, the syllabus for the training programme was discussed further by the PESO officials and engineering colleges. The syllabus for three courses has been designed for occupiers, supervisors and workers of fireworks factories said R Venugopal, controller of explosives and centre head, PESO in Sivakasi. "One such training programme is named as fireworks supervisors development programme which will be conducted jointly by PESO, Sivakasi and Renganayagi Varatharaj College of Engineering from December 2 to 5," he said.

The objective of the safety programme is to ensure that the correct employee is assigned to the job in which one is trained for and to integrate health and safety measures into all job tasks. The participants would be educated to abide by all central and state government regulations such as Explosives Act & Rules, Factories Act & Rules and to provide accident and near miss investigation procedures to prevent recurrences as well as to always maintain and promote safe work practices, PESO officials said.
