State-of-the-art burns ward ready in Sivakasi

“It will be a boon for those from southern districts”

A burns ward set up under the Centre of Excellence for Burns Treatment at the Government Hospital here is getting ready with state-of-the-art medical equipment and specialist medical officers to treat victims of fire accidents, especially those occurring in cracker industries.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa will soon inaugurate the facility. Ms Jayalalithaa had ordered establishment of the Centre of Excellence for Burns Treatment following the worst-ever fireworks accident at Muthalipatti near here on September 5, 2012, in which 40 persons were killed and several others injured.

The need for such a facility has long been felt as the victims of fire accidents die often due to lack of quality medical attention during the golden hour. Many patients succumbed to the burns on their way to Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

Among the modern facilities at the centre is the centralised oxygen supply to the Intensive Care Unit, operation theatre and post-operative ward. The ward also has a C-Arm facility to deal with multiple injuries such as fractures and soft tissue injuries, ventilators, an anaesthetic work station and theatre ceiling lights with LED lamps.

The air-conditioned ward has Fowler’s cot for the convenience of patients with alpha bed that would prevent them from developing bed sore.

The cost incurred to set up the entire facility, including construction of building, appointment of specialist doctors, purchase of modern equipment, furniture, linen and stores, is Rs.4.50 crore.

Joint Director (Health) M. Kathiresan said five specialist doctors – a plastic surgeon, general surgeon, orthopaedic surgeon, anaesthetist and a physician – had been appointed. Besides, a physiotherapist, 15 staff nurses, a lab technician, hospital staff and sanitary workers had been posted, he said.

The facility would be a boon to all the southern districts as far as burns treatment was concerned. It would also be a trauma care centre, he added.

Minister for Information and Special Schemes Implementation K.T. Rajendra Balaji inspected the 52-beded ward on Sunday. Virudhunagar MP T. Radhakrishnan and Collector T.N. Hariharan were among those who accompanied him.
