Sivakasi Police arrested director Saran

Sivakasi police on Friday arrested Tamil film director Saran on Thursday in connection with a cheque fraud case. While the director was shooting for his Aaayirathil Iruvar, which has actor Vinay in the lead, at Tirunelveli, the Sivakasi town police armed with an arrest warrant took him in to custody early in the day. The film crew were shocked and the shooting was suspended.

The police produced him before the Sivakasi judicial magistrate who, however, enlarged him on bail in the evening with two-member surety. JM Jospeh Joy had on August 12, 2014, issued an arrest warrant against Saran in a cheque fraud case and had asked the police to present him before the court.

The warrant was issued following his failure to appear in the court for a case filed by a Sivakasi-based printer Gnanasekaran on August 22, 2011. In his complaint, Gnanasekaran said that he had printed wall posters as requested by Saran for a film titled ‘Muni’ which he produced.

The director, he claimed, had given him a cheque for Rs 50 lakh towards the order he had placed but the cheque dated December 18, 2010, bounced. Later, Gnansekaran moved the JM court which on Friday granted bail to the director on being produced.

Emerging out of the court, Saran told reporters that the case against him was foisted and he would face it legally and he left for Tirunelveli to resume the shooting for his upcoming movie. Saran has directed films like films like Kadhal Mannan, Amarkalam, Gemini, Vasool Raja MBBS and Attagasam among others.
