Pongal sale picks up in Sivakasi

Whenever festivals such as Diwali, Christmas or New Year’s Day approach, roadside vendors and hackers in Sivakasi start concentrating on the sale of festival-related articles. On the eve of Pongal Festival Sivakasi vendors procure sugarcane, panangilangu, colour kola podi, kannu pila chedi, coconuts, manjal chedis and other things, well in advance of Pongal.

More than 50 sugarcane, kannupilla chedi and manjal chedi vendors stalls has been placed in the main areas of Sivakasi town. Price of one sugarcane is Rs.30-35, one bunch (12) of sugarcane is Rs.350, one piece of manjal chedi is Rs.15-Rs.20, one piece of kannupilla chedi is Rs.5-Rs.10, 10 pieces pack of Panangilangi Rs.30-Rs.35, 25 pieces pack is Rs.70-Rs.75, colour kola podi price ranges from Rs.2 to Rs.8 per pocket, in Sivakasi.

Police and traffic constables have been set up to control crowd in the busy four car streets of Sivakasi. Traffic constables are gearing up for crowd management for Pongal purchase in Sivakasi. Festive mood has already set in and many Sivakasians began to draw colour kolams in their home, setting the tone for the pongal celebrations to come. Today, the commercial streets of the Sivakasi town were filled with a maddening crowd busy shopping. The pongal sale was at its peak.
